The clinical potentials of endogenous neurosteroids

[Review of ]. DRUGS OF TODAY, 38(7), 465–485.

By: D. Reddy*

MeSH headings : Animals; Brain / metabolism; Desoxycorticosterone / analogs & derivatives; Desoxycorticosterone / biosynthesis; Desoxycorticosterone / metabolism; Desoxycorticosterone / physiology; Humans; Pregnanolone / biosynthesis; Pregnanolone / metabolism; Pregnanolone / physiology; Receptors, GABA-A / drug effects; Seizures / prevention & control; Stress, Psychological / metabolism
TL;DR: Physiological neurosteroid fluctuations have potential implications for stress-sensitive neurological conditions such as epilepsy, infantile spasms, as well as psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, posttraumatic stress disorder and depression. (via Semantic Scholar)

Muscle cramps in two standard poodles with hypoadrenocorticism

Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association, 38(5), 437–443.

By: M. Saito n, N. Olby n, L. Obledo n & J. Gookin n

MeSH headings : Adrenal Insufficiency / complications; Adrenal Insufficiency / drug therapy; Adrenal Insufficiency / veterinary; Animals; Desoxycorticosterone / analogs & derivatives; Desoxycorticosterone / therapeutic use; Dog Diseases / drug therapy; Dogs; Extremities; Female; Male; Muscle Cramp / complications; Muscle Cramp / drug therapy; Muscle Cramp / veterinary
TL;DR: It is concluded that hypoadrenocorticism can be associated with episodes of painful muscle cramps in standard poodles and altering treatment to desoxycorticosterone pivalate resolved the electrolyte abnormalities and the episodes of muscle cramping in both dogs. (via Semantic Scholar)

Expression of basal lamina protein mRNAs in the early embryonic chick eye

JOURNAL OF COMPARATIVE NEUROLOGY, 447(3), 261–273.

By: S. Dong*, J. Landfair*, M. Balasubramani*, M. Bier*, G. Cole n & W. Halfter*

author keywords: basal lamina; chick eye; retina; laminin; nidogen; agrin; collagen IV; collagen XVIII; perlecan
MeSH headings : Agrin / genetics; Animals; Basement Membrane / embryology; Basement Membrane / metabolism; Basement Membrane / ultrastructure; Cell Differentiation / genetics; Chick Embryo / metabolism; Chick Embryo / ultrastructure; Ciliary Body / embryology; Ciliary Body / metabolism; Ciliary Body / ultrastructure; Collagen / genetics; Collagen Type IV / genetics; Collagen Type XVIII; Endostatins; Gene Expression Regulation, Developmental / genetics; Heparan Sulfate Proteoglycans / genetics; Laminin / genetics; Membrane Glycoproteins / genetics; Nerve Tissue Proteins / genetics; Peptide Fragments / genetics; RNA, Messenger / metabolism; Retina / embryology; Retina / metabolism; Retina / ultrastructure
TL;DR: In situ hybridization studies showed that the expression pattern of every basal lamina protein mRNA in the developing eye is unique, and some of the mRNAs have short, transient expressions in the retina, most notably that of collagen IV and laminin gamma 1, which appear in the ventral retina between E4 and E5.
