In Vitro Fermentation of Dietary Carbohydrates Consumed by African Apes and Monkeys: Preliminary Results for Interpreting Microbial and Digestive Strategy

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PRIMATOLOGY, 33(1), 263–281.

By: J. Lambert* & V. Fellner n

author keywords: Cercopithecinae; Colobinae; Colobus; Diet; Gorilla; Nutritional ecology; Pan; Papio; Short-chain fatty acids
TL;DR: Results indicate that the captive individuals exhibit high total SCFA concentrations, with a particularly high acetate-to-propionate ratio, which is consistent with data on diet and digestive retention times among Catarrhini and has implications for understanding of the interactions among diet, body mass, digestion, and how monogastric cercopithecines can consume either similar or greater levels of fiber than larger-bodied apes. Application of multiple shrinkage methods to genomic predictions

JOURNAL OF ANIMAL SCIENCE, 90(6), 1777–1787.

By: C. Maltecca n, K. Parker n & J. Cassady n

Contributors: C. Maltecca n, K. Parker n & J. Cassady n

MeSH headings : Animals; Bayes Theorem; Cattle; Cluster Analysis; Computer Simulation; Female; Genomics; Male; Models, Genetic; Quantitative Trait Loci
TL;DR: Results suggested a relatively small advantage in multiple shrinkage models could represent a useful alternative to current methods of prediction; however, their performance in a variety of scenarios needs to be investigated further. (via Semantic Scholar)

Effects of feeding strategy on milk production, reproduction, pasture utilization, and economics of autumn-calving dairy cows in eastern North Carolina

JOURNAL OF DAIRY SCIENCE, 95(2), 997–1010.

author keywords: stocking rate; supplementation; grazing; milk production
MeSH headings : Animal Feed / economics; Animals; Cattle / physiology; Dairying / economics; Dairying / methods; Diet / veterinary; Dietary Supplements; Female; Lactation / physiology; Milk / metabolism; North Carolina; Reproduction / physiology; Seasons
TL;DR: The greater stocking rate resulted in increased productivity and greater income over feed costs per unit of land, and breed differences were observed; conception rates at first and all services, as well as pregnancy rates, were greater for Jersey and crossbred cows compared with Holsteins.
